Agile Testing

In today's rapidly evolving working environment, dynamic software development models are used more and more, with Agile Scrum as one of the most popular ones. As a software tester it can be difficult to fit in to an Agile Scrum environment. Team members are usually generalists that can perform multiple tasks within the team where a software tester's skills are focused more on testing. Other members of the team don't usually have the skills needed for software testing.

In the first module of this training we will help you gain more insight into the workings of an Agile development team. We will also help you see how a software tester can fit into that team, not as a hindrance but as a major asset. In the second module we take an in-depth look at testing and test management within an Agile Scrum environment, show you how you can apply Scrum to a test team and offer some ways of applying the principles of Agile Scrum to create different development approaches.

Intended audience

Module 1 - Introduction: Anyone who is going to perform, performs or supervises testing in an Agile environment.

Module 2 - Advanced: Anyone who already performs, or supervises testing in an Agile environment and wants to understand the test lead role in an Agile environment.

Duration & Languages

2 days (1 day / module) - English/Dutch.

The two modules can be followed independently. The second module has the first as a prerequisite.

Content Module 1 - Introduction

• Agile: a brief overview of what Agile is, what principles it's built on and what motivates an Agile tester.
• Introduction to the Agile Scrum Process: a short overview of what Agile Scrum is.
• Testing within the Scrum Process: we provide the building blocks for a strong approach to testing within the Scrum process.
• Agile team (psychology): we discuss the roles within a Scrum team, providing a deeper insight into the way it works.
• Scrum workshops and lessons learned: using workshops and discussion we go over what we have learned and how to apply our knowledge to a working environment effectively.
• Multiple exercises: This course mixes theory and practice, using exercises throughout the course to help make the material less abstract and to give a head start of experience in applying the principles explained in the course.

Content Module 2 - Advanced

• Test Management: is test management obsolete in an Agile Scrum working environment? We show you why this is not the case.
• QA-gile: although Agile software projects don't usually use a formal quality assurance process, it is one of the key elements in an Agile software project.
• Scrum for testing team: Scrum is not only useful for software development. With some adaptation it can help a testing team increase their productivity and effectiveness significantly.
• Development approaches: armed with the knowledge already obtained in the course we take a look at two development approaches that use Agile Scrum to great effect.
• Multiple discussions: This course mixes theory and practice, using exercises & discussions throughout the course to help make the material less abstract and to give a head start of experience in applying the principles explained during the course.
